4 Myths About Women Who Have Decided Not To Have Children
There are many myths, ideas and stereotypes about women without children. Generally these ideas are negative and hurtful and usually come from women who do have children and criticize their female counterparts. The main ideas are:
1. Childless women hate children
There is a tendency to think that women who choose not to have children do so because they do not tolerate or feel affection for children. This is totally untrue. The need for affection, care and fun with children is independent of motherhood. There are jobs that meet these emotional needs without the need to have children of your own. Among the professions with these characteristics are pediatrics or education.
2. Women without children secretly wish to have them.
On some occasion when talking to a friend about her children and her motherhood, she asked me if perhaps I was anxious about having children and that is why she brought up the subject. His logic is somewhat shocking to me because I have never heard that a mother who expresses her interest in childless women is accused of not loving her own. It is likely that there are women who have this hidden desire, but it has been shown that more and more women are making conscious and informed decisions not to have children and focus on other aspects of their lives.
3. Women who decide not to have children are selfish.
Those who criticize women who do not have children often say that they are selfish and do not want to commit to someone else. However, these women are often deeply committed to causes that appeal to them and seem important to them. It could be your family, friends, or they work in volunteer organizations. In fact, in the last five years there has been an enormous growth of couples who choose not to have children to share and carry out the activities that seem important to them to improve their relationship and quality of life.
4. Women without children are not as committed to their jobs as mothers who are
In various studies carried out by psychologists and human resources experts, it has been found that employers prefer to hire women with children because they consider that they are more committed to their work. However, specialists have not found data to confirm this discrimination.
The reality of women is in constant evolution
Although one of the most important roles in a woman’s life is her role as mother, modern societies are faced with the fact that many women consciously and informedly choose not to be mothers. This is not something new, in recent decades the number of children has decreased considerably. We must remember that in the time of our grandmothers or great-grandmothers, it was normal to have more than 5 children, statistics that decreased to 2 children or less in the last two generations.
